Peter H. Rheinstein, MD, JD, MS, FAAFP, FCLM, FAPCR, FAALM
Peter Rheinstein has been Chairman of the American Board of Legal Medicine (ABLM) since 2011. He has been a Fellow of the American College of Legal Medicine (ACLM) since 1973 and an ACLM Board of Governors member for a total of 20 years including four terms as ACLM Treasurer. He received the ACLM Gold Medal in 2003.
Since 2012, Peter has been Chairman of the United States Adopted Names (USAN) Council which assigns the generic names for all drugs marketed in the US. He represents the Maryland State Medical Society at the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and the Academy of Physicians in Clinical Research (APCR) in the American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates. He is Treasurer and a Past President of APCR. Previously, over 25 years at the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Peter was responsible for implementing the generic drug law and for regulating prescription drug promotion.
Peter is a consultant on medical law and regulation. He is an active researcher (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=rheinstein+p&sort=date&sort_order=desc) and was the founding publisher (2001-2023) of www.DiscoveryMedicine.com, an internet-based journal indexed in PubMed. He has practiced medicine, served as medical director for a chain of long-term care facilities, as the first President of a company providing physician services in hospital emergency departments, and as senior vice president for clinical and regulatory affairs at a company developing cancer diagnostics and therapeutics. He was a consultant and member of the Board of Directors at Marnac when the company developed pirfenidone, the first approved treatment for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. He is a Past President of both the Drug Information Association (DIA) and the Academy of Medicine of Washington, DC.
Peter earned his BA (1963) and MS (1964) in math at Michigan State, MD at Johns Hopkins (1967), and JD at U of Maryland (1973), where he serves on the Alumni Board. He is board certified in legal medicine, family medicine and geriatrics. He is licensed to practice medicine in MD, DC and CA and admitted to the practice of law in MD, DC and before the Supreme Court of the US.
